If you have a smartphone there's no need to buy or rent a dedicated GPS navigator. You can easily download a navigation app for free from the mobile app store.
My favorite app is Google Maps. It does have it's shortcomings, though; in some countries it lacks voice guided navigation, offers a less extensive experience and lists few attractions.
So in order not to get lost on vacation, it's good to know a couple of other apps for backup.
Whether traveling by car, foot or public transport, here's a list of must-have apps:
Google Maps – great for navigation in and outside cities, by car or foot. An internet connection is required to load directions, but once moving it's not needed.
There's an option to download maps of the area to your device, enabling you to use the app offline.
For a detailed explanation about downloading offline maps – see this link.
HERE – an excellent app that works offline as well. This app allows to save places of interest in advance and is available for free to Android and iPhone users.
Sygic– a good app with the ability to work offline. Includes a wide selection of countries. It offers a free version that's quite enough for me.
Available for Android and iPhone.
TripAdvisor – is best for choosing places of interest.
TripAdvisor offers two apps:
The full version which requires an internet connection, and the city guide for offline navigation includes big and well traveled cities.
MOOVEIT – is great for public transport navigation
